What it actually is
Hongyadong Folk Customs Scenic Area, usually shortened to Hongyadong, is in Yuzhong District, Chongqing. It opened officially in 2006. Its main structures are built into the hillside in the style of traditional Chongqing stilted houses, 11 storeys high, with about 53,000 square metres of commercial space. It is currently a national 4A-rated tourist attraction.
It is not an ancient street site but a group of stilted-house-style buildings stacked up a slope — understanding this sets the right expectation.
Why the night view became famous
Around 2016 Hongyadong's night scene went viral on Chinese short-video platforms, and visitor numbers have grown every year since. It has been described as Chongqing's "city card" and "reception room".
The reason is simple: layer upon layer of warm golden light spreading up the hillside, with the river in front and the cliff behind. That density of a "three-dimensional city" is hard to replicate elsewhere.
Combining it with the night cruise
- From the river: on the night sail, Hongyadong appears as one whole illuminated facade — you see how it relates to the water and the bridges. This is the panorama.
- From the shore: walking inside the complex is a close-up experience of lanes, shops and crowds — a completely different view.
- Suggested order: walk the shore first to sense the scale, then board and look back from the water. The two views complement rather than repeat each other.
Viewing tips
- Lighting-up times shift with the season and daylight — no need to memorise a clock time, follow on-site and wharf notices.
- Crowds are dense on holidays; watch over elderly companions and children on viewing platforms and walkways.
- Keep valuables close when shooting at night in crowds.
- The riverside wind is strong; dress warmly if you plan to stand and watch for a while.
