Decide one thing first: your boarding time
Plan the day backwards: lock in the night cruise's boarding time and wharf first, then work out the daytime itinerary — not the other way round. Chaotianmen is at the northeastern tip of Yuzhong District, so keep daytime activities within the Yuzhong peninsula and the handover will be much smoother.
Option 1: Classic peninsula
- Morning: walk the Yuzhong peninsula and feel the city's level changes and lanes.
- Afternoon: wander around Hongyadong and get familiar with the buildings you will see at night.
- Dusk: move toward Chaotianmen, wait by the river and eat something.
- Evening: board for the night sail and look back at where you walked during the day.
Option 2: Three-dimensional views
- Afternoon: ride the Yangtze cableway across once to build a sense of the river's width and the height difference.
- Dusk: stay on the far bank or by the river and watch the sky darken and the lights come on.
- Evening: return to the wharf and board, seeing the same high viewpoint again from the water.
Option 3: Easy finish
- Daytime: schedule something physically demanding and spend your energy during the day.
- Dusk: return to your accommodation, rest and eat.
- Evening: do only the cruise, then head back — add nothing else.
This suits people travelling with elderly companions or children, or anyone who has already walked a lot. The cruise is seated viewing, so it works well after your energy is spent.
Three principles for connecting the schedule
- Do not cut the last attraction too fine: leave a buffer for getting to the wharf.
- Do not book dinner far from the wharf: eating then rushing is where things most often go wrong.
- Push everything later on holidays: crowds and traffic slow every leg.
