Where the two rivers meet
Chaotianmen is at the northeastern tip of Yuzhong District in Chongqing, at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, with water on three sides and higher ground in the middle. The Yangtze runs yellower and the Jialing clearer, so you can often see the boundary between the two water colours at the meeting point.
Stone stairs and the upper and lower city
Even after redevelopment, long steep stone stairways still connect the "upper city" with the riverside wharves. That vertical drop is the most direct evidence of why Chongqing is called a mountain city.
Where the night cruise begins
As the main wharf area for the night cruise, Chaotianmen comes alive after dusk. Arrive a little early, watch the confluence from the bank, then board and look back at the terrain from the water.
Practical reminders
- There are many stairs and slopes — wear flat, non-slip shoes.
- The riverside wind is strong and the night is cool; bring a jacket.
- Crowds concentrate on holidays, so allow plenty of time to arrive and queue.
