Where the difference in feeling comes from
Chongqing's summer days are hot, with a pronounced urban heat-island effect. After dark the river has strong breezes and moving air, and water temperature is relatively stable, so it usually feels more comfortable than the city streets. That is the direct reason the night cruise is popular in summer.
Two things to guard against in summer
- Thunderstorms and severe convection: summer weather changes fast — check the forecast and watch for wind and storm warnings.
- Peak crowds: the summer holidays are high season, with crowded wharves and boats; book early and arrive early.
What to wear and bring
- Short sleeves by day, plus a light jacket for the night — the boat is windy and sitting still gets cool.
- Sun protection still matters by day; at night the main issue is wind.
- Bring water but do not overdo it — toilets on board are less convenient than ashore.
Photography note
Summer nights are humid and lenses fog easily. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth before boarding, and put the camera away after shooting rather than leaving it in the damp air.
