Where Chaotianmen is
Chaotianmen sits at the northeastern tip of Yuzhong District in Chongqing, at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, with water on three sides and higher ground in the middle. Even after redevelopment, long steep stone stairways still connect the "upper city" with the riverside wharves — the most direct lesson this mountain city can give you.
Getting to the wharf
- Metro: ride to the Xiaoshizi or Chaotianmen area, then walk toward the river following the wharf signs.
- Bus or taxi: set "Chaotianmen Wharf" as the destination and ask the driver to drop you at the closest point to the wharf, not halfway.
- Driving: parking is available near the wharf; spaces are tight on holidays, so arrive early or use public transport.
How much time to allow
Boarding is a process rather than a moment: arrive at the wharf → find the right berth → verify your ticket → queue to board. In peak season and on holidays crowds concentrate, so leave a generous buffer before departure instead of cutting it fine.
- Weekdays: arrive early enough to locate your berth and complete verification.
- Holidays, summer and weekends: crowds increase noticeably — allow more margin.
- In rain, snow, strong wind or changing water levels, sailings and berths may change at short notice, subject to on-site arrangements.
Common pitfalls
- Chaotianmen is both a transport hub and a popular viewpoint — it is easy to head the wrong way in a crowd, so check the berth number.
- The riverside wind is strong; waiting gets chilly, so bring a jacket.
- There are many stairs and slopes — wear flat, non-slip shoes and slow down with elderly companions or children.
In short
Treat Chaotianmen as a transport node that needs a time buffer, not just an address. Arrive early, confirm your berth, have your documents ready — and the night sail becomes pure enjoyment.
