The Yangtze cableway: a 1,166-metre view across the river - Chongqing Two Rivers Night Cruise

The basics

  • It links 151 Xinhua Road in Yuzhong District with 4 Shangxin Street in Nan'an District.
  • It entered service on 24 October 1987.
  • Total length 1,166 metres; each cabin carries 81 people including the operator.
  • A one-way crossing takes about 3 minutes at a maximum of 10 m/s.
  • It was rated a national 4A tourist attraction on 6 February 2018.

What three minutes shows you

Crossing the river unfolds at once: the height difference between upper and lower city, the width of the river and the shape of the far hills. For a first visit to Chongqing it is the quickest way to build a sense of the city's space.

Pairing it with the night cruise

The cableway gives a lateral, three-dimensional view; the cruise boat gives a longitudinal view from the water. Cross in the late afternoon, then return to the wharf and board — you move from height to water level as the light changes most richly.

Notes

  • Cableway and cruise ticketing and queuing are separate; plan time for each.
  • Peak-season queues can be long — plan it as an attraction that requires waiting.
  • Operating and maintenance schedules change; check on-site notices before travelling.
