Two rivers, two colours: why the Yangtze and Jialing look different - Chongqing Two Rivers Night Cruise

One yellower, one clearer

The Yangtze and Jialing meet at Chaotianmen. Because their basins, sediment loads and seasons differ, the two often show clearly different water colours, forming a two-colour boundary line at the confluence that runs parallel for a stretch before gradually mixing.

Why it is called the "Two Rivers" cruise

The "two rivers" are the Yangtze and the Jialing. The night route generally covers the confluence section, letting visitors experience both rivers and the buildings on their banks from the water.

When the contrast is clearest

  • After rain, changes in sediment load make the colour difference more pronounced.
  • In dry and flood seasons the volume and flow differ, so the shape of the boundary changes too.
  • In good light the line between the two colours is easier to distinguish.

Viewing note

Water colour is a natural phenomenon that changes with rain and season; a clear boundary is not guaranteed. Treat it as a possible bonus rather than a certain sight and you will enjoy it more.

At night the surface reflects strongly and the colour difference is less obvious than by day, but the reflections of the lights are worth watching in their own right.
