The rule before boarding: seven-tenths full
You will be on a boat with slight motion. An empty stomach makes you light-headed; a heavy one makes you uncomfortable — seven-tenths full is the steadiest state.
- Leave enough time to eat before boarding; do not eat and run.
- Avoid heavy drinking — the water environment amplifies the effect of alcohol.
- If you have a sensitive stomach, go easy on rich or spicy food before boarding.
Timing
- Earlier sailings: eat dinner first, then walk slowly to the wharf.
- Later sailings: have something light in the early evening, then a proper late meal after disembarking.
- Dinner combo: dining on board is part of the experience — do not plan another full meal ashore.
After disembarking
Chongqing's nights are livelier than its days, and a meal afterwards is a natural finish. Two criteria: close to where you are staying and no long queue. With night crowds, spending an hour queueing for one meal reduces the experience.
Choosing with elderly companions or children
- Children: favour light, easy-to-digest food and avoid heavy spice.
- Elderly: mind the temperature and texture; skip things that need hard chewing.
- Everyone: choose places with seats — standing to eat does not suit tired family members.
One often-overlooked point
Dining near the river and attractions usually costs more than in the city. If time allows, walk a little further — both price and taste are more relaxed.
